IT in Transportation

The courses in this Certificate address how the digital transformation and emerging information technologies enable/drive innovation, especially by leveraging technology to gain competitive advantage in the transportation industry.

Transportation is not what it was even a few years ago.  Understanding emerging information technologies and their impact on the transportation industry, and the roles and responsibilities of IT and non-IT stakeholders in leveraging these emerging technologies in light of the digital transformation, will be at the heart of all of the courses.

The Digital Transportation Certificate focuses on the use of IT to enhance the strategic, tactical, and operational elements across the transportation industry value chain.

Transportation is vital to our society's proper functioning, providing mobility of people, goods, and services. It enables people to access job markets and participate in recreational, cultural, educational, and social activities, let alone enable/drive industry value chains. Moving people and products to their destination in time for their use is essential in today's fast-paced world. The transportation field also is a major contributor to the economy, as a consumer of resources and as a supplier of jobs. IT, especially in light of emerging information technologies, is fundamental to transportation.

Examples of

AIs Impact

  1. Autonomous vehicles that can drive without human intervention
  2. Smartphone apps that provide navigation, ride-sharing, and customer service
  3. Traffic management solutions that optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion
  4. Law enforcement that uses AI to detect violations and enforce rules
  5. Predictive maintenance that uses AI to monitor and repair vehicles
  6. Intelligent freight & supply chain planning

Transportation functions in a very complex environment which, at the beginning of the 21st Century, is characterized by constant change in the technological, regulatory, and legal frameworks. Transportation professionals must not only be able to meet the technological challenges of new systems and emerging technologies, they must also be capable of fitting these systems into the social, economic, and physical environments in a manner that improves the quality of life for all stakeholders, while ensuring competitive advantage.

This certificate will prepare candidates to help integrate their value chain through leading edge IT strategies and services. It is appropriate for any specific type of transportation (e.g., railroad, airlines, trucking, shipping, etc.) looking for opportunities to leverage IT from the front office marketing to customers to the support of its complex equipment and infrastructure. The courses are designed for IT and non-IT professionals in the transportation industry whose roles involve leveraging digital transportation industry opportunities to provide demonstrable value from their IT investments, in light of the digital transformation and emerging information technologies (e.g., AI, blockchain, social media, analytics, big data), while addressing important considerations like providing a secure infrastructure and hybrid work environment.

GIIM will work with you to derive the appropriate focus & content for the courses within this certificate, based on the specific transportation industry (e.g, air, rail, truck, ship), and the backgrounds and objectives of the candidates.

The following is the template describing the 4 courses for this certificate:

(All courses are available live/synchronously face-to-face & online)

1. The Transportation Industry Trends and Issues

The certificate starts with the business imperatives of companies operating in this sector, and their approach to creating an IT strategic plan and project roadmap intended to create worthwhile business value. The unique challenges of regulatory compliance, state requirements, security, massive data sets, super-computing, networks to extreme locations etc. are also addressed. This course focuses on how the digital transformation enables innovation, especially by leveraging emerging technologies (e.g., blockchain, AI, Robotics Process Automation, social media, analytics, big data) to empower customers/clients, along with the ever changing regulatory considerations, and demand to improve employee efficiency and effectiveness.

2. The Transportation Industry Technical-Processes

The certificate then deals with the emerging information technologies involved in the transportation technical systems and processes for building, maintaining, scheduling, and load matching, and the complex reporting and monitoring systems required across the entire transportation ecosystem.

3. The Transportation Industry IT Back Office Operations

The third course addresses the business functions and processes that support funding, development and production, such as Finance, HR, Production Accounting, Insurance, Legal, Tax, Treasury etc.

4. The Transportation Industry Best Practices

The fourth and final course deals with best-practice execution, in terms of organizational governance, marketing, sourcing and vendor management, portfolio and project management, and service delivery that integrates the content from the first three courses and extends it across the internal company to customers/clients.

As Transportation organizations accelerate the digital transformation of their industry, they are focusing their investments in leveraging information technology to improve customer/client products/services while lowering overall costs. In today’s highly regulated, increasingly resource-constrained, and cost-focused environment it is essential to understand how to effectively and efficiently manage an organization’s information technology (IT) resources. There are numerous strategic, tactical, and operational choices to be made about managing Transportation IT resources and it is essential to ensure that IT and non-IT executives across the organization work in harmony.

Experience has made it clear that Transportation organizations need well-conceived organizational structures, skills, processes, and decision rights to ensure that IT investments are appropriately leveraged across the organization, especially when considering the impact of emerging information technologies.

This course prepares Transportation executives by providing a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental decisions related to the management of IT resources in the Transportation environment. The course will also provide an overview of current and future information technologies and their potential impact on customers/clients, organizations, and associated stakeholders.

The course is designed to be delivered live/synchronously (face-to-face or online) with a total of twenty (20) contact hours. While the schedule is flexible, it is usually delivered in approximately ten (10) 2-hour modules/lectures/sessions.
